What's new in Version 2?
This page has been written for users of Version 1 to enable them to quickly identify major changes in KnowledgeWorkshop. If you are a new user please start your exploration with the product overview.

Simplification
The subject mode has been renamed to the All Folders mode and significantly restructured. The division of the knowledge database into Subjects, each with a separate tree of topics, has been replaced with an single tree from which sections can be displayed in an independent window (Hoisted). The notes and discussions (newsgroups) trees have also been integrated into the All Folders tree eliminating their respective modes. The Search Mode has been replace by a search tool on the toolbar so you no longer need to change your mode to conduct a search.

Repositories
The most significant change to KnowledgeWorkshop in Version 2 is the introduction of multiple repositories. A repository is a database where a subset of your items can be stored. The default repository, called the Core, is stored on a local drive. Additional repositories can be created and accessed via special repository folders in the navigation tree. Each repository has its own set of templates, attributes and attribute sets, folder watches and reference formats. Each repository can be independently searched, and has it's own keyword index. A repository can be located on a network drive, a local hard drive (including a USB connected hard drive) or on KnowledgeWorkshop's new Repository Server where multiple users can share items. To protect items in a multi-user environment the ability to lock and checkout items has been added. The Repository Server (a separate product) enables you to define users and their access to individual items within the shared repository.

Multiparenting
A single item within the All Folders tree can now be a child of multiple parents. In essence, a virtual copy of the item can be placed at multiple locations within the tree. However, the item is still stored in a single place within the database and has a single set of metadata. For example, any content editing or addition of highlighting to the item in any of its locations is reflected in all virtual copies everywhere within the tree. This provides a powerful tool for connecting and cross-referencing items without duplication of content and effort.

Microsoft Outlook Integration
Tree items can now be created for Outlook e-mail, tasks and contacts via drag and drop or by exporting from Outlook. These items can either be copies of the content or references back to the items within Outlook. This significantly expands KnowledgeWorkshop's ability to manage and integrate information sources.

Publishing to a Web-site
In addition to creating and sharing knodules, information can now be shared with others by publishing your tree structure and its content to a web server.

Attribute Sets
Users can now create attributes and apply them in sets to items. This enables you to make a list of important characteristics that you may want to compare between items, add values to these characteristics for each item and search for items with particular values assigned to an attribute. For easy comparison you can list all items with the attribute set applied and sort by any of the attributes.

Templates
Templates are items containing content and metadata that you may wish to apply to other items. With KnowledgeWorkshop 2 you can convert any item into a template. When creating a new similar item you can apply the template.

Changes to the Display
Within the new single All Folders tree, icons now graphically reflect the item type (The "W" icon for a Word document for example). Mousing over the icon creates a popup with extensive information including the item's name, complete URL and descriptive information if defined. The new Administration folder within the tree provides easy access to, and management of folder watches, attributes, templates, and reference formats. Within the browser toolbar there is a new 'My Computer" icon which displays the standard "My Computer" interface within a KnowledgeWorkshop browser window. This enables you to select and drag and drop files from local and networked drives to the tree with ease.

Display Management
Content within the Main Display and Split View display areas is now interchangeable. Items and lists can be moved from one to the other by dragging their tabs. This greatly improves your ability to select items to co-display and copy information between. Right clicking a tab provides options to [close all] or [close all other] tabs. Displays of lists such as search results, keyword index results etc, can be set to open either in the main content display or the split-view display by default.

Hyperlinking to KW Items from Other Applications
You can now create links to KW items, including items in shared repositories, inside other applications. For example, you could add a hyperlink within a word document pointing to a note within KnowledgeWorkshop. When the link is activated on a computer with KW installed a KnowledgeWorkshop browser window appears showing the content.
